Introductions
Hello everyone. On behalf of myself and `
MissShyly I welcome you to our first Artistic Nude Gallery update for July 2007. We are just getting underway and there isnt going to be a whole lot to report just yet. However, I wanted to introduced your new gallery directors and touch base with you all. We are both very excited at the challenges ahead for the gallery and are looking forward to serving the community. If you have any questions please feel free to note either of us and we will try to help you with anything we can.
Miscats
It is certainly my hope that we can educate the community on properly placing their deviations. As with some of the other new Gallery Directors a great deal of my time in the first week plus has been dedicated to relocating deviations that do not meet the requirements of the Artistic Nude gallery. Many of these miscats seem to be just mistakes in placement while others seem to have been purposefully put into the gallery. It is this last category that I want to address most. In the coming weeks I am going to try and clarify policies that pertain to the Artistic Nude gallery. I know there seems to be a lot of confusion, not only about what is a policy violation and what is not, but also where exactly artistic nudes can be placed. So, I will work with the appropriate people to try to get this cleared up for you. Hopefully, these steps will help in aiding the proper placement of deviations within the gallery.
Feedback
I am currently seeking feedback for Artistic Nudes. If you have any thoughts on ways to improve the gallery, please send me a note. As one of the more difficult galleries that can come under fire a great deal, I am very interested in your thoughts on ways to improve the image of the gallery. Of course there are many who still view nudes in a negative light - maybe, together, we can change a few minds. So please, send me any thoughts you may have. I am very interested to hear what you have to say.
DD Suggestions
Please send your DD suggestion to myself or `
MissShyly. As you may have read from other gallery directors, there have been some changes in the criteria in that it is not so strict. Favorites, no favorites - popular, unpopular
it is all fair game. Personally I am encouraging people to think outside the box with their suggestions to me. Find works that are unusual that we do not see everyday. We have all seen the wonderful and beautiful studio nudes time and again. They are breath-taking to be sure. However, I would like to see shots that are driven more by emotion and story with a grittier and harsh style. If you come across anything of this nature I would like to see it.
Contests
There
will be contests coming soon. I will give details as soon as hey are available.

That's All
That is about it for now. Remember, feel free to contact myself or `
MissShyly if you have any questions or suggestions regarding Artistic Nudes.
One of the issues I continue to harp on is that art must have context. It needs to communicate something meaningful. Communication, however, is a two way thing. The artist may be eloquent, but the viewer dogmatically will only see what they want to see. One of the profound annoyances and sadnesses I have when I have one of my nude images favourited is when I look at the profile of the favouriter and they have no gallery of their own, or one entirely composed of nudes and poorly shot, self-promotional self nudes. I can't engage in any dialogue (through my works, or with language) with that person. I create art, and they see a visual aid to their masturbatory fantasies.
Again, context is everything. I could take a close up picture of a male masturbating and ejaculating and it is pure, banal porn. If I call it "Release Me", creating a contextual irony between the hand tightly gripping and the "release" of orgasm, then that is communication, and so art. A viewer may think it is pure porn, no matter what I say or do. Another viewer may term both versions art, because they provide their own contextuality.
Taste is so subjective. I recognise that DA is carried on servers in the USA, but the USA are not the arbiters of all things artisitic. Other cultures view nudity and porn differently. I'm an Australian, and we tend to be a little looser in our definitions. Europeans are looser still.
I really can't offer any solutions. At the end of the day, I don't own the servers. I don't have to comply with US legal requirements for my work (unless, as per the terms and conditions, I place the work on a server in the USA). What I can offer is another voice to add to the dialogue, through my writings and my images, and the hope that art will win, and minds be opened.
whenever I'm searching newly added Artistic Nudes, I become frustrated at the fact that I have to weed through a slew of poor quality shots of body parts seemingly containing little artistic merit. I am in no way saying that I am the authority of art, but it's very difficult for me to consider a nude portrait awkwardly shot with a 6mm lens, poor lighting, legs spread and expressions that even Hustler would pass by art.
I agree that a separate category for these types of pieces would serve the purpose of cleaning up the category, as the deviants are obviously not classifying these images as scraps....when they are in fact snapshots.
I think it is a very good thing that you are to take on the legacy of Scott, especially considering that you know firsthand how difficult it can be for deviants who submit to the artistic nude section. I'm glad they picked you. Congrats!
